Abstract

The purpose of the present contribution is to provide a series of recommendations to guide subtitlers in the production of subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing children in a Spanish context. In order to establish such criteria, this contribution has taken as its starting point several reception studies of a children’s product subtitled for the deaf and hard of hearing. The product is an episode of the cartoon series Shin Chan, whose subtitles were specifically produced for this study according to the existing criteria in Spain (Standard UNE 153010 Subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing. Teletext subtitling, published by AENOR), corrected (Pereira & Lorenzo 2005) or implemented when necessary. The recommendations offered here may also serve as points of departure for future analyses of subtitling for deaf and hard of hearing children, using different methodological tools such as eye-tracking or any other cognitive technology. The recommendations also serve as a guide which can be taken into consideration when drafting the Spanish Standard for Subtitling for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Children) for digital television.
