Abstract

Although the field of subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing is perhaps the most widely researched field – and the field which has captured the interest of both broadcasters and postproduction media industry – there is still much research to do to validate the already existing services, and to suggest new and attractive ways to improve these mature services. This contribution proposes a new approach to the creation of subtitles, borrowing ideas from mobile technology and the Internet, and applying popularly accepted iconography to subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing in an attempt to enhance the reception of contextual information.
