Abstract

Subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) is a great complement when used within virtual avatar environments. However, much research needs to be done in order to ascertain the optimal formal features required to ensure the best possible reception among users. Avatar subtitles do not require the same format as subtitles used in other media such as digital TV or DV. The ULISES project (Utilización Lógica e Integrada del Sistema Europeo de Signos/Señas, The logical and integrated use of the European System of Sign Language) is an accessible initiative to help the deaf and hard of hearing through the use of virtual avatars and two other tools to enhance understanding: subtitles and contextual pictures. This contribution describes the ULISES project and indicates some features which may prove useful for SDH when used in conjunction with avatars.
