This article is the result of a collective drafting process by a committee composed of current members of ECOS, Translators and Interpreters for Solidarity. It explores issues such as how and to what extent a group of committed translators and interpreters can impact civil society, teaching, research, the profession and, therefore, society as a whole. It also addresses the issue of how ECOS is perceived in those circles; what a group like ECOS can contribute to critical analysis about the way in which translator and interpreter training and the socio-political role of translators and interpreters have evolved over time. These questions are addressed through an overview of the origins of the association, its fields of activity, its functioning, the concept of volunteer work in translation and interpreting, and coordination with critical social movements in our immediate environment (Granada and Andalusia) and with other translation/interpreting activist groups globally.
