Abstract

This article aims to explore the factors that may hinder the production and reception of translations of political texts as well as the strategies used to circumvent them. To do so, it focuses on the case of the Greek translation of the Communist Manifesto in 1919. After placing the essay in the study of translation of political texts produced by (counter-hegemonic) organizations, the author introduces the Communist Manifesto and its 1919 Greek translation, and then turns to explore the socio-political (i.e. ideological, economic, educational and linguistic) factors that constrained the reception of the 1919 translation by its intended audience. This is followed by an analysis of the ways in which translation (including contextual, paratextual and textual) choices are indicative of an endeavour to tear down these barriers. The discussion explores the strategies used by counter-hegemonic institutions and politically committed translators to reach the widest possible audience, in spite of its heterogeneity and of political persecution, which makes this case study particularly significant for the study of translation and activism.
