This study answers the question of the “textness”of notes, particularly notes in literary translations. In various linguistic theories, only linguistic structures are defined as "text", consisting of a series of sentences. Notes, which often only consist of one sentence, are therefore on the border between text and non-text. In this study, an analytical model is developed which allows us to assess the degree of "textness” of notes. The analysis is based on text type criteria that take both the macro structure level (texts that consist of more than one minimal communicative unit) and the micro structure level (sentence or word level) into account. As a result, three models are presented. They illustrate the different degrees of “textness” using numerous case studies. The model that is proposed here for the analysis of notes can also be used to examine the “textness” in other text types that do not reach the level of multi-sentence text.
