Abstract

This article presents five women who all wrote and translated in(to) Catalan: Montserrat Abelló, Helena Valentí, Marta Pessarrodona, Maria Antònia Oliver and Maria-Mercè Marçal. Throughout their literary careers, they never tire of looking for symbolic mothers: some of those chosen are Catalan, others are foreign. The foreign texts are translated not only for a better understanding, but also through a determination to incorporate women writers of the world and their texts into Catalan language and culture. Affinity and a sense of responsibility combine in the translation project. With their translations of the works of Anna Akhmatova, Doris Lessing, Katherine Mansfield, Sylvia Plath, Susan Sontag, Marina Tsvetaieva and Virgina Woolf, these women writers and translators have worked tirelessly towards establishing a feminine literary culture in Catalan.
