The vastness, complexity, and diversity of the region vaguely defined as Asia and the relative lack of accessible information make it almost impossible to present a comprehensive and balanced overview of historical or contemporary thinking on translation. Central and West Asia are excluded here because their very different contexts deserve separate treatment by those with area expertise. The focus in this chapter is on the languages and cultures of the East and South of the continent.
