Abstract
The 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were extraordinary events, posing significant challenges to China’s interpreting community. At the same time, it provided an opportunity for China to develop community interpreting. This paper presents a landscape of China's interpreting market in general and its community interpreting market in particular prior to the Games. It also introduces a new model created by Beijing Foreign Studies University in order to indicate how a university provided language services for Beijing Olympic Games, through which the paper discusses the interdependence between international sports events and the development of community interpreting in China.
