After a discussion of the demands on the cognitive system of the translator, the author sets out to describe the overall features of translation competence. Next, he focuses on the qualitative parameters of translation competence. He distinguishes five parameters of translational competence: language competence, textual competence, subject competence, cultural competence and finally transfer competence. Other issues discussed include equivalence, units of translation and translation procedures and some practical implications.
