Abstract

The author of this paper illustrates the importance of an awareness of the role of register, for the language-pair French and English, in the light of a contrastive analysis based on the translation of an English text, an excerpt from J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. From this he draws consequences for translation strategies, which are investigated with a view to clarifying the nature of the corresponding sub-competence to be acquired.
