Abstract
Prescriptive translation approaches either listed compulsory translation procedures for interlinguistic inequivalence items or labelled them as untranslatable. Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS), however, have undertaken to account for real translation occurrences. Equivalence is now understood as the relationship between a source text and a target text, which is redefined for each translation process. Thus, translemic equivalence does not pursue optimal translations but rather focuses on acceptable renderings, in sharp contrast with former prescriptive parameters of loyalty to the ST. This descriptive approach will be applied to a sample of English-Spanish headlines in order to assess whether faithfulness is a necessary condition for the establishment of translemic equivalence.
