Abstract

The first part of the paper, which is called ‘Shakespeare in Neoclassical Garb’, provides an introduction to the history of Russian Shakespeare translations. The next part considers some trends in romantic Shakespeare translation. The best part of the paper is dedicated to a discussion of the works of romantic Shakespeare translations into Russian, with a focus on translators such as Vronchenko, Kyukhelbeker and Yakimov. The paper also investigates stage versions in the 1830s and Polevoy’s successful Hamlet staging.
