Abstract

This paper focuses on what could be considered the first Italian translation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet by Alessandro Verri. This version, however, was never published nor performed. After an introduction, the article embarks upon the actual translation, Verri’s relationship to Voltaire and French culture and Verri’s style as a translator of Hamlet. In afinal instance, the paper formulates a tentative conclusion.
