Abstract

This paper sets out to investigate certain aspects of the early reception of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Low Countries and attempts to correlate these with some hypotheses concerning the functional role of Shakespeare in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century theatrical and literary life.
