Abstract

This paper aims to apply what we know about listening, reading, speaking and writing to translation and interpreting. Translation and interpretation clearly are tasks that involve language and languaging. Translation involves reading and writing, at a minimum; interpretation involves listening and speaking. Both translation and interpretation involve more than these language skills, but it might prove useful to see what we know about listening, reading, speaking and writing that might apply to translation and interpretation. To make that extension, the paper lays out a task analysis of translation, discussing aspects of listening and reading that are relevant. It first discusses the relations between listening and reading. Next, the paper provides a comparative analysis of reading and translation. Finally, it provides a model of the translation process.
