Abstract
In the last decades of the twentieth century and the first years of the twenty-first century, the different fields of interpreting have experienced various degrees of evolution in their professional status depending on the type of interpreting and on the country, and in many cases even on the region of a particular country. Based on the professionalization continuum comparison, which compiles attribute, process, and power and market models, the activity of interpreters is moving into the final stages of professional development. These final stages toward the professionalization of interpreters, which in several areas of the world are yet to be attained, are defined as (i) academization—education, a body of research, and academic journals; (ii) identity—service in relation to social values, and professional associations and trade unions; and (iii) standardization—terminology, a system of norms, accreditation, and legislation.
