Abstract

While early interpreters were chiefly employed as community interpreters, at present they are also called upon to work at universities and high-level scientific or political meetings. Université Paris III therefore introduced in 1992 a program for training French Sign Language (LSF) conference interpreters. The principles and methodology are the same as for vocal interpreters. For the purpose of interpretation, gestual signs are functionally similar to vocal signs; the same maxim applies: interpreting a speech is not the same as translating a language.
