Abstract
This paper deals with the impact of cultural change on the norms of translation practice. It shows that conventions long presumed secure can again become subject to question, so that even outstanding prize-winning translations might not be judged adequate in different cultural contexts. The author pleads for a constant rethinking of translation, of translation studies and of the extent of practical training in translation studies, so that changing language interactions and mobile conventions keep translation "a task that puts a premium on knowledge".
