Abstract

The author argues that translators must adopt a dynamic approach and consider the situation surrounding the speech act of translation. Therefore, they have the choice between different types of equivalence in function of situational factors. With respect to the category of text types (which he sees as an expression of writer intention), Sager discusses the choice between translating into existing target language text types and translating into translation-specific text types. He also evaluates the influence of machine translation on this subject.
