Abstract

This paper deals with the translation of theatre plays, which are categorized as an audio-medial text type. According to the author, the specificity of these texts derives from the fact that they rely on extralinguistic (technical, graphic, acoustic and optic) media for their realisation. According to the author, these kinds of texts should always be adapted to the literary, social, intellectual, cultural, historical etc. needs and habits of the intended audience. He argues, however, that the translator should produce a literal and faithful translation of the source text, leaving the adaptation to the theatre experts.
