Abstract

Music played an outstanding role in the evangelization of Nueva España. Franciscan friars translated into Nahuatl the Christian doctrine by means of plainsong achieving thus the conciliation between two very different creeds. One of the main actors in this painstaking task was Fray Pedro de Gante, a humanist, the first Arts and Crafts teacher in the New World and the predecessor of “The Twelve Apostles” in Mexico.
