Abstract

The aim of this paper is to set a bio-bibliographic profile of the Franciscan friar Maturino Gilberti, born in France in the early 16th century and established as missionary in México, where he died in 1585. This friar left a very important work of evangelization, which has given such important results as its Dialogue of Christian doctrine in the language of Mechoacán, dated 1559. He was also -like many other Spanish missionaries- an exceptional grammarian and lexicographer of indigenous languages, the “Tarasco” in his case. He developed several grammars and dictionaries on this language, which made him one of the leading writers in “Tarasco”. So we will focus on these “four Maturinos”: the religious-spiritual man, the grammarian, the linguist, and the translator and lexicographer through its four major works, written in the mentioned Indian language.
