Abstract
Fray Bernardo de Lugo’s translation and linguistic activity is framed in the evangelizing mission of the colonial era. This Dominican friar entered history of Amerindian philology for having composed the first grammar of the Muisca language. The work, with its myseries and splendours, is still one of the main sources of knowledge and inspired Muisca language work subsequently carried out about this language, extinct since the eighteenth century. This contribution introduces and contextualizes in a brief manner the intellectual activity of this friar, collecting the keys that allow to trace his profile as a linguistic missionary and to value his contribution to indigenous studies.
