Abstract
This contribution summarizes the main points of discussion during the Special Workshop devoted to the problem. Apart from Romania, the countries represented included Bulgaria, Poland, Lithuania, Austria and Germany. It sketches the situation of translator training in many Eastern European countries shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In general three questions of common concern seem to affect the new translation departments in these countries: language competence and choice of languages, relationship with other departments, and curriculum structure.
