Abstract

Language variation within a text is a phenomenon which translation theory does not have many answers for, despite the many case-study publications on the matter. One way to make conceptual theoretical progress is by questioning the traditional L1-L2 view of translation “proper”. All textscould be regardes as being potentially multilingual or having some degree of linguistic variation. The chapter discusses how the traditional interlingual approach (L1-L2) to translation can be challenged and how to validate the L3 proposal further with examples from Inglourious Basterds and its dubbed version. The examples have been drawn from dubbed versions of the film made in Germany, Spain and Italy.
