In this paper the author tries to look at three reasons why formal-equivalence translations are preferred – the popular contentions that they are logically direct or logically simple, and that they are somehow more objective than dynamic equivalence translations. One thrust of all these notions is that the translator’s role or input is minimized in formal-equivalence or literal translations, and that this is all to the good.
