Abstract
This chapter explains – in two parts - why it is difficult to get computers to translate. The first part consists of some general remarks about the nature of translation, and the abilities of computers. These lay out the ground and provide a general but rather unsatisfactory answer to the question. The second part looks in more detail at the sorts of problems that create the difficulty, and provides a more detailed and revealing answer.
