Abstract

This chapter considers the use of MT and CAT tools in the teaching of translation, both to trainee translators, and to language students in general. Firstly, some suggestions are made about the way the subject can be presented. Secondly, the focus is shifted to the possible use of translation software in language teaching. The author points out that language teaching is related to translation as a linguistic activity, and reviews some proposals for the use of translation software to enhance language learners’ perception of contrastive differences between languages. Thirdly, the author considers some strategies for educating users such as scientists and business people into the best uses of MT. In the last section the author looks briefly at the aspects of MT that might interest linguists, computational linguists, computer scientists and so on, and he suggests some ways in which translation software can be used to illustrate areas of interest.
