Abstract
The author’s aim in this paper is to discuss the uses whereby a dictionary can and should aid reading and using a foreign language. First he looks at current practices in the design of English-Arabic dictionaries in the context of his own experience regarding typical users’ language backgrounds and language-learning cultures. Then he advances some concrete suggestions for improving the closeness of fit between what the dictionary presents and what the users need.
