Abstract

This paper advocates using translation as an effective communicative strategy in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), with emphasis on classes for listening comprehension and speaking. Some activities of the author’s own teaching experience are presented and discussed, along with their implications for teaching translation itself. Finally, some methods are suggested to alleviate the negative effects of using translation in TEFL classes, such as interference errors, low communicative competence, and monotony.
