Abstract

This article looks back on the first German and English translations of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, which marked the start of the success story of the manga genre in Germany. It examines the many interventions in the layout of this comic book, to make manga (a genre still largely unknown in the 1980s and 1990s) more accessible for a western readership.
