Abstract
This section presents part of a letter (§5-6) written by Jerome to his friend Pammachius in the year 395 (Litterae ad Pammachio: de optimo genere interpretandi). The letter was translated in Dutch by R. van den Broeck. In this letter, Jerome discusses the best method of translating. He is convinced that a translator should render sense for sense and not word for word, just like he himself does. To underpin this thesis, he refers to, among others, Cicero and Horace.
