Abstract
This section presents part of an open letter ‘Sendbrief vom Dolmetschen’, written by Martin Luther in the year 1530. The letter was translated in Dutch by J.P. Boendermaker. In this letter, sent from Wartburg where he was exiled, Luther comments on the reactions to his bible translation (1522-1534). He explains that his main goal was to translate scripture in pure and clear German, guided by the language of the common people.
