Abstract

The study compares the translation processes of one professional and one non-professional translator (who is, however, a subject specialist). The findings indicate that the professional translator gleans information from the text as a neutral mediator of information, while the subject specialist tends to be side-tracked by her own views and attitudes. In addition, the non-professional proceeds in a linear fashion, while the professional's process is characterised by numerous backward and forward shifts and concentration on problematic items.
