Abstract

Garner’s perspective is that of a lexicographer on the front lines. He addresses the five core questions that all lexicographers have to grapple with. Among the responses to those questions, he also discusses the five tenets of defining words outlined by Landau (1971) and applied to legal terms. The singularity of the approach in the modern editions of Black’s Law Dictionary is highlighted, including the citation of sentences, not just to illustrate the use of terms but the quotation of substantive experts precisely for their expertise, to lend greater historical and intellectual depth to the entries.
