The article describes a research project in progress; the first stage describes the translation strategies of 45 advanced learners of English; the second stage includes data from 22 professional translators (bilingual children were included later). Preliminary findings show that professionals prefer a sense-oriented approach and considerably larger units of translation than the language learners.
