Abstract

Clichés, which are neither mere collocations, free associations, examples of usage, nor even ordinary idioms, are not singled out for specific treatment in bilingual dictionaries; they can even be said to be mistreated by them. This paper aims to establish criteria to identify clichés for lexicographical purposes, to define the microstructural strategies (in terms of labelling, exemplification, contextualization and translation) that could make it possible to present clichés discriminatingly in bilingual dictionaries together with a range of convincing and useful translations, and finally to review several reasons why they are mistreated by them.
