Abstract

This chapter describes a course for doctoral candidates entitled “Translation Pedagogy”. The course is an introduction to key texts in the field of translation studies; it interrogates notions of equivalence and explores the ethics and politics of translation as well as the role of translation(s) in the academy and the global literary marketplace. It also seeks to supplement the methodology of close reading that holds sway in literature departments with other forms of analysis that account more adequately for the fact and implications of translation, such as distant reading, historicization, translation comparison, and the placement of translation in a spectrum of other forms of rewriting or textual meditation.
