This chapter describes a graduate seminar on “(Post)Colonial Translation”, offered at the University of Minnesota. Shuttling between critical translation theory, literary history, and imaginative literature, the seminar interrogates the role of translation – interlingual, ontological, epistemological, cultural – in imperialism and (post)coloniality. Readings span Africa, the Americas, the Arabic-speaking world, Asia, and Europe. In sum, the course untangles the asymmetrical dynamics of translation under (post)colonial conditions, showing how these engender both the universals that underpin empire and the particulars that issue from and against them.
