Abstract

This paper aims at describing the translation techniques and the applied linguistics method of Trajections used for the Spanish translation of a medical nomenclature. It depicts the manifold aspects of translating and the various difficulties encountered in delivering natural and faithfully transcoded medical nomenclature, which in turn secures terminological consistency. The authors present a background to SNOMED and explains the differences between interface and reference terminologies. They exemplify translation procedures and techniques through terms solely extracted from the source terminology, with special focus on Malone's linguistically based method of Trajections, from an analytical viewpoint, as contrasted with the operative mode.
