Abstract

When reading a text in a foreign language, learners do not look up all words which cause problems. The central aim of this paper is to shed some light on the question why such learners decide to look up some (types of) words and not others. After a review of the relevant literature, the author reports on a piece of empirical research where texts containing three types of words were read or translated by advanced learners of French and where their dictionary use was monitored.
