Master students at ESIT subtitled an interview with an American economist by Democracy Now! in Japanese. The aim of this exercise was to make the subtitled video available to the public on the website of Democracy Now Japan. This article looks into the rewriting process from the first translation through subtitle writing and rewriting to the final revision by the professional translator responsible for the Japanese site. The analysis of the rewriting process focuses on three points: 1) rewriting required by subtitling rules and constraints; 2) rewriting required to adapt the content of the American economist’s talk to the Japanese public, with prior researches made by the students for complete understanding of the interview intended for the American public; 3) the final revision by the experienced translator. Through these analyses, the specific writing skills that are required in subtitling will be identified.
