The author examines the notion of culture and cross-cultural communication, focusing on the representation of alterity through exoticism in the literature and art of English-speaking countries since the 18th century. Taking as a starting point postmodern and postcolonial translation theories, the theoretical analysis studies the history and the revision of its Eurocentrism, the criticism of the traditional concept of canon, and the cultural translation of 'exotic' cultures.
