Abstract

The experience of migration makes different peoples get in contact and generates numerous social and cultural changes. In this exchange of multicultural experiences, the role of translation and interpretation should be to bridge the linguistic and cultural gaps among those peoples. In such a multicultural and linguistically diverse society like the United States, translation and interpretation services are essential in Legal, Health and Social Service settings. The state of California, for instance, is heavily populated by immigrants from all over the world. In this paper the author presents a personal interpreting experience at the UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles, USA) to illustrate the need of those immigrants to receive interpretation and translation services in a medical setting. She also comments on the role of translators and interpreters as mediators between medical providers and patients, as mediators between cultures.
