Abstract

The author wants to clarify the concept of multimedia in order to suggest some distinctions between the communicative practices considered within the field of multimedia translation. He claims that information technology can influence decisively the way we deal with reality as long as we accept the communicative behaviour prevailing in the net as a natural one. The author sees hypertext as a series of fragments – lexias as Barthes would have called them – and considers it to be polyphonic in a Bakthinian sense. In the next section he ponders on virtual reality and identifies the features of virtual reality experiences which could influence translation matters. Hypertext and the internet lead the author to think of a new aesthetics and new regulations. Section 5 considers the relevance of Bakhtin’s concepts.
