Lindqvist, Yvonne. 2021. Institutional consecration of fifteen Swedish translators – ‘star translators’ or not? In Kaindl, Klaus, Waltraud Kolb and Daniela Schlager, eds. Literary Translator Studies (Benjamins Translation Library 156). Amsterdam: John Benjamins. pp. 137–154.

Abstract

Within a Bourdieusian framework this paper examines the institutional consecration processes of a group of 15 Swedish translators during the period of 1990–2015. The aim of the study is to determine their amount of accumulated individual translation capital based on an investigation of translation prizes, grants and appointments within the Swedish literary translation field. Translation capital is the symbolic capital of the literary translation field in question, i.e., ultimately the right to determine the dominant translation practice in the field. Another aim is to find out whether the studied translators can be described as ‘star translators’ and, consequently, whether there is a ‘star culture’ within the Swedish literary translation field.
