Abstract
The author points out a few recent trends in the distribution of non-English films, such as on one hand the outstanding performance of foreign films, particularly in the American market; the initiatives of certain programmes to improve both language transfer and the distribution of European films; and the development of multiplex cinema theatres. On the other hand, rising production costs have resulted in independent films being rapidly absorbed by the major players. Drawing on research in cultural studies and film history as well as on recent studies undertaken by economists and market analysts, this paper examines the extent to which the recent trends affect the production and distribution of foreign-language films. It also discusses the promises and myths of the global marketplace and explores some of the opportunities for non-English productions.
