Abstract

The author, a German subtitler and editor of subtitles with Subtitling and Language Services at the SBS Corporation in Sydney, explains how subtitlers at her company go about producing quality subtitles and what standards are in place. A subtitle can only be as good as the person who prepares it. Therefore, the first part of this paper deals with the standards developed by SBS Subtitling and Language Services for the selection, training and monitoring of subtitlers and editors of subtitles. The second part attempts to answer the vexed question or what is quality in a subtitle and how it (or, more likely, the lack of it) is recognized.
