Abstract

The subject of this paper is live interlingual subtitling, i.e. subtitling a programme while it is on the air, from one language into another. The paper sketches a short history of live subtitling in the Netherlands, describes a pilot project set up by NOS and NOB to create a group of permanently available live subtitle-translators, or interpreter-subtitlers, in order to meet any short-term requests by clients for this particular service. The remainder of the paper reports on the events surrounding the political drama in the White House, involving sex, lies and video tapes. A description of the pros and cons of the product of live subtitling rounds off the paper.
